Stablecoin Settlement Cost, Measured — why sub-cent agent payments are only viable on-chain
Moving USDC on Base, Solana or Polygon costs fractions of a cent per transfer — two to four orders of magnitude below card interchange or ACH on the same amount. That gap is the entire economic argument for stablecoin rails in agent-to-agent micropayments; this page pins the actual measured numbers, per network, per date, so the claim can be checked rather than assumed.
Which networks agent payments actually settle on
Measured over a 30-day window ending August 20, 2026 (Chainalysis on-chain data, reported via cryptobriefing.com): USDC on Base dominates x402 transaction volume with 7.3 million transfers; USDC on Polygon is third-largest with 5.6 million transfers in the same window. USDC on Solana is smaller in that window — 518,400 x402 transfers recorded (cryptopolitan.com, on-chain data, August 2026), roughly 7% of Base's volume in the same window. Roughly 50% of x402 payment volume routes through the Coinbase facilitator (coinfomania.com, on-chain analysis). USDC itself accounts for approximately 100% of x402 transfer volume across these networks — no meaningful competing stablecoin (cryptobriefing.com, Chainalysis transfer volume analysis, measurement date August 2026). This ranking is a snapshot of one 30-day window, not a structural fact: x402-specific volume is still young and concentrated in a single facilitator, so the network mix can shift as adoption spreads.

Off-chain costs the gas figures don't capture
Gas fees cover the on-chain transfer only. Converting fiat to USDC (on-ramp) and back (off-ramp) adds a spread that dominates total cost for any transaction that touches fiat at either end:

At $0.01: Solana costs $0.0003–$0.001 (3–10% of transaction value), Base $0.001–$0.003 (10–30%); a Visa regulated debit transaction costs ~$0.21 (0.05% + $0.21 fixed fee — at this transaction size the fixed component alone is over 20x the transaction value, so the real floor is the $0.21 fixed fee, not a small percentage minimum); ACH runs $0.20–$0.75 flat (2,000–7,500% of transaction value); wire transfer $15.00+ is structurally impossible at this size. Conclusion on micropayments (≤$1.00)
stablecoins on Solana or Base are economically feasible, at 0.03–0.3% of transaction value; card networks' fixed-fee component ($0.10–$0.22) makes anything sub-dollar unprofitable for the merchant, with effective cost reaching 21–2,500% of transaction value; ACH's flat fee makes sub-dollar payments economically impossible (2,000–7,500% of value); wire transfer's $15+ floor rules out anything below roughly $1,500–$3,000.
What does NOT hold up as stated
The figures above are gas-only unless explicitly marked otherwise — a claim like "stablecoin settlement costs $0.001" without specifying on/off-ramp is incomplete for any flow that touches fiat; see the off-chain-costs section above for the 0.15–0.40% that has to be added back in. Network dominance rankings (Base > Polygon > Solana in the 30-day window) are a single-window snapshot, not a stable fact: x402 volume is still early and concentrated in one facilitator, so any claim of a single "dominant" settlement network should carry its measurement date, not be stated as a fixed fact.
